As 1923 has progressed during Season 2, the focus has been on the harshness of man and winter alike. Spring begins to appear in Episode 6, but its arrival brings violence and bloodshed instead of any fresh signs of life. No fewer than seven people die in “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters,” and as the death toll mounts, it’s hard not to think about just how many more people will die by season’s end.
“The Mountain Teeth of Monsters” emphasizes loss and all its components while proving that no one is safe. Here’s what happened and who managed to survive.
The Hunt For Teonna Comes to a Bloody End For Everyone but Her

Viewers learn from the outset that Pete Plenty Clouds (Jeremy Guana) was k|lled by Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane) at the end of Episode 5. When Kent and Father Renaud (Sebastian Roche) arrive at Pete’s body and that of his dead horse, they get into a disagreement. Renaud finds Kent’s actions to be sinful, but as the skirmish unfolds, the Priest shoots Kent in a cold-hearted manner that puts the latter to shame. Renaud runs off and does not appear again until the end of the episode.
Runs His Horse wakes up and pulls his gun on Renaud, but the Priest shoots him first. Teonna wakes up and Renaud tells her she can’t run anymore, that he is the light, and she needs to repent to receive salvation from the darkness. She refuses over and over again. Just as he is about to k|ll her, she throws hot coals in his face. Then she grabs a knife and stabs him.
The War Has Begun for the Duttons, and Casualties Are Rising in ‘1923’

Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) and Lindy (Madison Elise Rogers) achieve a new level of depravity in Episode 6 of 1923, only adding credence to arguments that he is the ultimate villain. Even as they torture their new victim, Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) brings word about Spencer’s homecoming to Whitfield. Whitfield also sends men to various train stations to intercept Spencer, an especially important thing to do with word of his heroism during the war spreading quickly.
Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) and Elizabeth Strafford (Michelle Randolph) are at the Dutton ranch while Jacob and others are out in the wilds waiting for Spencer. Jacob leaves Zane (Brian Geraghty) to protect the house, reminding him he has a hole in his head, and to position Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) at the gate to give the soon-to-be father some semblance of protection. Jack’s impatience gets the best of him, however. He rides off and comes face-to-face with two of Banner’s men. After some verbal back and forth, they shoot Jack and ride off.
Nobody knows Jack is likely dead, but Zane did tell Cara that he rode to find Jacob. Before that conversation, Cara and Elizabeth were enjoying a quiet evening by the fire during which the former offered an insightful and scathing assessment of mankind.
A Deadly Road Trip Leaves Alexandra Stranded and Alone as Spencer Tries To Find His Way Home
In the Winnetka, Illinois, home of Paul and Hillary (Augustus Prew and Janet Montgomery, respectively), the kind train travelers who offered Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) refuge, they listen to what seems to be an impossible story. Alexandra offers the play-by-play of the journey she and Spencer were on together as well as the one she’s on to unite with him once again. Paul and Hillary are so taken with her tale that he offers to drive her to Montana. Hillary is delighted by the idea and the three are all set for a cross-country adventure.
Their trip is supposed to last three days and, at first, it went smoothly. They appear to be having fun as Alexandra learns to drive, and they view the landscape of Minnesota and South Dakota. As they push further west, the weather shifts. When they stop in Wyoming to get gas, the woman at the gas station tells Hillary and Alexandra they would be better off foregoing the car and taking a train the rest of the way. Paul is busy having chains put on his tires, and Hillary dismisses any idea that they will not arrive at their destination safely.
Alexandra wakes up in the daylight to find the car is stopped. Lodged in a snowdrift, she looks over the front seat to talk to Hillary but finds her frozen body instead. The driver’s seat is empty and, when she opens the door to look for Paul, she sees his body, too. She climbs back into the car, rightfully scared, cold, and stranded.
Spencer is also facing weather woes as he travels, but he’s doing his best to find trains that will get him as far as possible. If anyone had any amount of good fortune in this episode, it’s Spencer, but his arrival in Montana doesn’t bode well for anyone.
