Taylor Sheridan is officially working on a new project, and this time it’s outside of the Yellowstone universe. In a newly released Deadline article, it was announced that Sheridan would be producing a Tulsa King spinoff entitled NOLA King, starring none other than Oscar-nominated actor Samuel L. Jackson. What is ‘NOLA King’ about?
NOLA (short for New Orleans, Louisiana) King is expected to be a spinoff show set in the same world as the widely popular show Tulsa King, which stars Sylvester Stallone. It is going to be written by Dave Erickson, who also worked on Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown, and produced by Sheridan, Jackson and David C. Glasser.
Much of NOLA King’s plot remains unknown. According to the Deadline announcement, Jackson is expected to play Russell Lee Washington Jr., a very well-known man in this fictional crime world. The character is expected to stop by Tulsa, Oklahoma, and face off against Dwight “The General” Manfredi (Stallone) before heading to New Orleans, potentially opening up the door for more crossovers to happen in the future.
As of publication, Jackson, Stallone or Sherican have commented on the spinoff news.
How ‘NOLA King’ connects to ‘Tulsa King’
Season 3 of Tulsa King is expected to release on Paramount+ at some point in 2026. The show follows a New York mafia capo, Dwight “The General” Manfredi, after he is released from prison and forced to rebuild a mob family in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“This was a very long, difficult, exciting, mind-blowing production has just ended in Oklahoma,” Stallone wrote on Instagram in 2022. “Though it was a long time to be away, it was worth it, and to work with fantastic talent in front and behind the camera. Special shout out to Paramount+ for making this happen, to Paramount’s Kevin Cox, David Glasser, Terry Winter, Braden Aftergood, Fiona Cush, and last but not least, Taylor Sheridan!”
In Season 3 specifically, the storyline is expected to pick up right where Season 3 left off, allowing viewers to see why Dwlight was kidnapped, and who kidnapped him. As mentioned above, there will also be a new character introduced, named Russell (Jackson), who will be there to shake things up.
The show was written and created by Sheridan and it is beloved that it has no connection to the Duttons or the rest of the Yellowstone universe. However, since the show’s initial release in 2022, it is believed that Sheridan has stepped back from the show and now mainly serves as a producer.
Taylor wrote the original version of the pilot, gave it to me, and said, “Take it and run with it.” And I did. I literally only met Taylor in person one time — and that was two-and-a-half years ago,” writer Terence Winter told The Hollywood Reporter in September 2024, “We just went off and did the show with Sly, and I hear Taylor likes it. He’s certainly got enough on his plate for him to worry about what we’re doing over in Tulsa.”
It is unclear if Sheridan will remain as hands-off when it comes to NOLA King.
What we know about the ‘NOLA King’ release date
Currently, there is no official release date for NOLA King, and aside from Jackson, there is no news on the casting either.
