Mark Your Calendars: Taylor Sheridan’s ‘F.A.S.T.’ Is Finally Out of Development Hell

Over the course of the last decade, Taylor Sheridan has established himself as a jack-of-all-trades in Hollywood, with the illustrious writer, director, producer, and actor creating one knockout show after another on the small screen. The mastermind behind the TV Western phenomenon Yellowstone, which has spawned countless spinoffs, including 1883 and 1923, Sheridan has become known for creating thrilling stories and unforgettable characters in fellow hits like Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman (with more on the way).

Though he may best be known for his dazzling TV contributions, Sheridan has also amassed quite a repertoire in the cinema and has penned the screenplays for acclaimed films such as Sicario and Hell or High Water, while also directing three feature-length films, like the Western crime drama Wind River. Sheridan is set to make his epic return to the silver screen with the upcoming action thriller F.A.S.T., an exciting new project he wrote featuring 1923 alum Brandon Sklenar that is scheduled to hit theaters in 2027; let’s take a closer look at everything we know so far.

Who Is Starring in the Upcoming Action Thriller?

After spending two seasons portraying Spencer Dutton alongside Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren in the hit Western series 1923, Brandon Sklenar will once again be collaborating with Hollywood titan Taylor Sheridan for his upcoming action thriller F.A.S.T. Sklenar’s other notable acting credits include the movies It Ends With Us and Drop and appearances in shows like Westworld, Walker: Independence, and The Offer. He will be taking on the lead role in the exciting new project, playing a seasoned former U.S. special forces officer. So far, the only other official cast member announced to be joining Sklenar in F.A.S.T. is Succession alum Juliana Canfield, who will be playing the film’s female lead in a yet-to-be-revealed role. The Tony-nominated actress famously appeared as Jess Jordan in the critically-acclaimed HBO masterpiece, and has also had prominent parts in Y. The Last Man, The Calling, and American Horror Story: Delicate.

What Is ‘F.A.S.T.’ About?

After steadily dominating the small screen and establishing a mighty TV empire, Taylor Sheridan is looking to return to the world of film with the action thriller F.A.S.T., a project he wrote back in the 2010s and one that had previously been in development hell. The intriguing film centers on a down-on-his-luck former special forces commando who, after returning Stateside, is approached by the government’s Drug Enforcement Agency to lead a black ops strike team in taking down dangerous drug dealers who are in the pocket of the CIA.

Initially picked up by Warner back in 2018 with the studio originally eyeing Chris Pratt to star and Gavin O’Connor to direct, the project subsequently stalled due to its ballooning budget and the worldwide pandemic and was effectively put on the back burner. During this period, Sheridan grew to become one of the industry’s most prominent showrunners and creators thanks to his TV juggernauts like Yellowstone, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman (amongst countless others). Thanks to his hefty Hollywood status, Sheridan helped F.A.S.T. become a top priority, with Sklenar announced as its lead star in May 2025.

The Creative Team Behind ‘F.A.S.T.’

Taylor Sheridan penned the screenplay for F.A.S.T., and he enlisted the expertise of renowned cinematographer and 1923‘s main director Ben Richardson to helm the action thriller, which will mark his feature directorial debut. Richardson has frequently worked with Sheridan and directed episodes of 1883, Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, and Tulsa King, while collaborating on films including Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Fault in Our Stars, and Sheridan’s Wind River.

David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of Heyday Films will be producing the mysterious project along with Sheridan and Jenny Wood of Bosque Ranch Productions at Warner Bros. Sheridan has showcased his knack for crafting gripping original stories with tough-as-nails characters, as he previously earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for the neo-Western Hell or High Water while also writing the lauded crime thriller Sicario. Based on the overwhelmingly positive reception to his work, F.A.S.T. is shaping up to be another feather in Sheridan’s impressive cap, with Warner Bros. commending the creator:

‘F.A.S.T.’ Production & Release Date

F.A.S.T. has yet to enter the production stage, and more cast members, characters, and plot details will likely be announced in the coming months since the action thriller is scheduled to make its debut in theaters on April 23, 2027.
