‘Landman’ Producer Teases Trouble for Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy in Season 2

Running an oil empire isn’t all steak dinners and smooth land deals — just ask Tommy NorrisBilly Bob Thornton’s Tommy may have inherited the throne at MTex Oil, but Season 2 of Landman is making one thing clear: just because you’re the boss doesn’t mean the job gets easier.

With filming well underway and no premiere date announced yet, co-creator and executive producer Christian Wallace is giving fans a taste of the drama coming to Taylor Sheridan’s West Texas oil saga. As Season 1 ended, Tommy was thrust into a position he never really wanted — stepping into the late Monty’s (Jon Hamm) shoes as head of MTex Oil. But Wallace says viewers shouldn’t expect him to suddenly swap cowboy boots for cufflinks full time.

“Well, the thing about Tommy is: He likes the guys,” Wallace tells TV Line. “He likes being involved in the day-to-day operations, at least to an extent. There are some days that I think he wishes he could never look at another pumpjack again. But it’s also part of what’s in his blood.”

That means while Tommy will spend more time in boardrooms and around big-money suits, his heart’s still out in the field — and that tension may lead to more than a few headaches. “I think you can take Tommy out of the patch to an extent, but not fully,” Wallace adds.

Thornton himself echoed that sentiment after the Season 1 finale: “Tommy is never going to get the landman out of him. I mean, that’s who he is. He does not want to be an executive guy. I don’t think he wants to be in the suit, but I believe he’ll do whatever it takes.”

What Do We Know About Landman Season 2?

Michelle Randolph, who plays Ainsley, recently confirmed in The Hollywood Reporter that she was well into filming Season 2 and feeling right at home, as Ainsley is heading to college, by all accounts, based on filming locations.

“I felt like we just started where we left off. I think I found the character last season and we all are so comfortable together. I’m on my second week of filming, and it’s fun to be back. I’m trying my very, very best to just completely tune it out. It worked, whatever I did, so I’m trying to get in the headspace I was in for the first season. Whatever the audience thinks, that’s not something I should pay attention to. It’s irrelevant to my process with Ainsley.”

Landman Season 2 is expected to premiere in November 2025 on Paramount+. Season 1 is now streaming.
