In a recent interview with his band The Boxmasters, Thornton was asked if the group would contribute songs to Season 2. While he confirmed they would not, he surprised fans by unveiling a brand-new project tied to the show.
“The Boxmasters are not, but Mark Collie is an old friend of mine, a country singer-songwriter… Collie said, ‘Hey, you and I should write a country song [for the show] and see what happens.’ The next thing you know, I’m talking to MCA about doing a soundtrack album, and before you know it, somehow we started co-writing songs with all these country singers. I have a co-write thing on the soundtrack coming out that we wrote with Ronnie Dunn, and Billy Gibbons, and Parker McCollum, and Dwight Yoakam.”
That lineup alone — Dunn of Brooks & Dunn fame, ZZ Top legend Billy Gibbons, rising country star Parker McCollum, and country outlaw icon Dwight Yoakam — is enough to make Nashville stop and listen. While details about the project are still under wraps, the implication is clear: Landman isn’t just a TV show anymore, it’s about to make noise in the music world.
Earlier this year, MCA released the Landman Original Series Soundtrack, composed by Andrew Lockington. His score was praised for matching both the sweeping Texas landscape and the intensity of Taylor Sheridan’s storytelling. The upcoming album, however, looks to be something different — a fully realized country collaboration that leans into the setting and themes of the series.
What Is Landman About?
Created by Sheridan and Christian Wallace, Landman is set in the boomtowns of West Texas, where billionaires and roughnecks collide in the cutthroat world of oil. Thornton stars as Tommy Norris, alongside Ali Larter, Michael Peña, Jon Hamm, Andy Garcia, Sam Elliott and Demi Moore.
The first season shattered records on Paramount+, becoming the most-watched premiere and finale in the platform’s history, drawing 35 million global viewers for its debut episode alone. Nielsen even confirmed that in Q4 of 2024, Paramount+ placed three shows — Landman, Tulsa King, and Lioness — in the Top 10 SVOD originals, a feat usually reserved for Netflix.
Season 2 is set to premiere this November, with the music project likely dropping around the same time.
