Landman Showrunner Seals Show’s Fate Following Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount Exit

After the massive bombshell that Taylor Sheridan is leaving Paramount for NBCUniversal in a deal reported to be worth multi-billion, it’s only fair to wonder what will happen to his Sheridanverse. However, at least one of his shows, Landman, has a certain answer. Landman premiered in November 2024, and, aside from the upcoming Yellowstone spinoffs, it’s Sheridan’s latest original. The series had instant success and will return with Season 2, and, although Paramount has yet to renew it, there are plans for multiple seasons. Speaking to ScreenRant, Landman‘s cast and showrunner have addressed the show’s future, even without the possibility of having Sheridan around.

Although Taylor Sheridan’s exit news came out in late October, it won’t happen until Jan. 1, 2029. Until then, there are more shows and seasons left to explore. Cast members Mustafa Speaks and Mark Collie both addressed the mogul’s looming exit, and his possible involvement in the show, even with his upcoming departure.

Speaks highlighted he couldn’t detail how Sheridan’s departure will affect the show, pointing out that, “I just know with Taylor, there’s always going to be a level of excitement, always going to be a level of unpredictability and intensity that the fans always know and love.”

Collie was even more confident that the show “it’s just going to keep on rocking.” He teased, “I think he’ll be involved at some level and whatever level that is, it’s going to take this show to the next level.”

Showrunner Christian Wallace, who co-created the drama series with Sheridan, pointed out that there’s still “a lot of runway” until the creator’s contract expires. Sheridan wrote all 20 episodes so far. However, he did tease that they would “keep drilling,” regardless. Wallace explained, “The thing about this show is there are so many ways that this can go, and the world is so vast and big. It’s full of stories, and so far we’re two seasons in and we’ve barely skimmed the surface of what we can do and what we want to do. So I just think that there’s a lot of runway left, and as long as there’s a story to tell and people are there for it, I hope we get to keep telling it.”

While it has yet to be confirmed, Landman is likely to return with Season 3, as well. With Sheridan’s contract up at the end of 2028, the show could easily still go up to Season 4 or 5 by then, and further branch out like Sheridan’s flagship series, Yellowstone.

It’s not difficult for a show to start strong and lose its momentum as more entries follow. However, similar to the rest of the Sheridanverse, Landman proves the opposite. After a stellar debut in November 2024, Season 2 is about to premiere and has already convinced some of the critics.

Even long after its January Season 1 finale, Landman has continued to show up in the streaming charts, proving a big interest in the latest Taylor Sheridan show. Luckily, ahead of its return, Landman is off to an encouraging start. Season 2 debuted with a strong 83% rating from the critics out of six reviews. Season 1 boasts a Certified Fresh 78% rating out of 37 reviews, but early seasons always tend to have more reviews than subsequent entries. Out of the six reviews available, only one is negative, and it comes from CBR’s own Katie Doll. The review argues the series is not for “Those who respect women and enjoy business-based dramas without background knowledge of the industry should probably continue to steer clear of the testosterone-fueled series.”

While the review admits Billy Bob Thornton carries the series, it points out its female characters are “written to be caricatures mocking feminity and giving the male characters a good reason to look smart,” calling them “the traditional definition of the male gaze.”

Landman returns with Season 2 on Nov. 16 on Paramount+.
