It’s Official, Yellowstone Is Marking the End of an Era for the Duttons

It’s officially the end of an era for Yellowstone. Taylor Sheridan’s immensely popular neo-Western television universe is at an inflection point, with the flagship series officially ended and numerous spinoffs on the way. After years of following the Dutton family across multiple centuries, new Yellowstone spinoffs plan to expand Sheridan’s franchise in new and exciting directions. Coming up later this year is a brand-new Yellowstone spinoff that promises to kick off an all-new era of the franchise. The Madison stars Michelle Pfeiffer as Stacy Clyburn, the wealthy matriarch of a powerful family who moves to rural Montana after a devastating tragedy robs her of her husband. The upcoming series is sure to be yet another hit from the mind of Taylor Sheridan, but it is a much more important part of the sprawling Yellowstone universe than anyone realizes.

The Madison is much more than just another Yellowstone spinoff; it represents a dynamic shift in the franchise that could dictate what future shows set in the same universe might look like. Eight years after Yellowstone first premiered, The Madison is the first series in Sheridan’s television universe not to focus on the Dutton family.

All of the previous Yellowstone shows have focused primarily on the Duttons. The original series tells the story of John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) and his children as they fight to stop their ancestral ranch from falling into enemy hands. The two prequel series, 1883 and 1923, step backward in time to explore how the Duttons first acquired their land and its development over the centuries.

So far, every other Yellowstone spinoff on the horizon is slated to follow the Duttons’ continuing adventures. Marshals depicts Kayce Dutton’s fresh start after selling the ranch back to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Reservation. Dutton Ranch stars Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as they establish a new ranch elsewhere in Montana. An additional prequel entitled 1944 is also expected to bridge the gap between 1923 and Yellowstone.

The Madison is the only upcoming Yellowstone series that steps away from the central Dutton family and attempts to tell a new story altogether. This makes it the most unique spinoff yet, as it doesn’t require any concrete connections to the other shows. Instead, The Madison will tell a new, original story that hopefully expands Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe much more than any of its predecessors. Ultimately, this is a terrific move for Sheridan and his creative team as they test the waters to see if Yellowstone can survive after the demise of its flagship series.

The Madison Is What Yellowstone Needs to Survive

The Madison may be a tremendous risk for a franchise that has performed incredibly well so far, but it is also exactly what Yellowstoneneeds to survive in the long term. The Dutton family has dominated Yellowstone for eight years, but their stories can only take the franchise so far. To continue for many more years to come, Yellowstone must expand its horizons to accommodate larger stories that don’t necessarily fit within the Duttons’ timeline. If the series is as well-executed as the other Yellowstone spinoffs, The Madison will open up a whole new world of storytelling for the franchise. No longer confined to the Duttons, Taylor Sheridan and his team will now have complete creative freedom to tell whatever stories they want to tell under the Yellowstone label. Some of these stories may not be connected to the Duttons at all, while others feature loose connections when necessary.

Now is the perfect time to experiment with the Yellowstone formula. With Taylor Sheridan leaving Paramount for NBCUniversal in 2029, the franchise needs to explore its full scope now, while it still has the same creative voice as the previous Yellowstone series. Sheridan’s guiding hand will be of great importance to The Madison and its sister series, but it won’t be there forever. Audiences will most likely be more willing to go along with Yellowstone‘s new experiments if Sheridan’s name is attached. The Madison is a tremendous experiment that will make or break the Yellowstone franchise. If the series is popular, it will prove once and for all that Yellowstone doesn’t need to be confined to the Dutton family’s story alone. If it lacks an audience, The Madison will reveal just how limited Yellowstone‘s scope is. The story of Taylor Sheridan’s popular television universe is only beginning to be told.

The Madison premieres on March 14.
