Taylor Sheridan’s New 9-Part Yellowstone Spinoff Has The BEST Cast In Franchise History
Taylor Sheridan’s Dutton Ranch Has The Best Cast In The Yellowstone Franchise
Dutton Ranch continues the trend of Yellowstone casting big names for its spinoff shows, with two-time Oscar-winner Annette Bening and Apollo 13 star Ed Harris both set to feature in the series. Alongside them, there are some especially well-chosen supporting actors, including Suicide Squad’s Jai Courtney, who has previous experience portraying Western characters. Courtney played in the lead in the 2023 Western drama movie Catching Dust, in addition to his appearance in Netflix’s miniseries American Primeval. Then there’s Narcos actor Juan Pablo Raba, and Marc Menchaca, who’s coming off the back of his portrayal of Sheriff Hayworth in The Abandons.
| Dutton Ranch Cast Member | Role |
|---|---|
| Kelly Reilly | Beth Dutton |
| Cole Hauser | Rip Wheeler |
| Finn Little | Carter |
| Jai Courtney | Rob-Will |
| J. R. Villarreal | Azul |
| Juan Pablo Raba | Joaquin |
| Marc Menchaca | Zachariah |
| Natalie Alyn Lind | Oreana |
| Ed Harris | Everett McKinney |
| Annette Bening | Beulah Jackson |
Natalie Alyn Lind rounds out the cast of Dutton Ranch, bringing with her the experience of playing a crucial part in the Western crime thriller Big Sky. As well as Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, Finn Little also reprises his role from Yellowstone, as Beth and Rip’s adoptive son Carter. This cast isn’t just packed full of stars. It has the right blend of experience and genre specialism, and balance of personalities and demographics that should make this ranching story set in South Texas feel authentic. No other Yellowstone show can match it as an ensemble of screen performers.
Dutton Ranch Brings Back Yellowstone’s Two Best Characters
Nevertheless, the most important thing in Dutton Ranch’s favor remains the deadly duo at the heart of its story. Beth and Rip are arguably Yellowstone’s two best characters, whose conflicting traits bring depth and complexity to the show. Their love story is profoundly humanizing, especially in a world where they’re both brutalized and alienated from their humanity in different ways.
While it’s impossible to picture Yellowstone without them, it’s easy enough to imagine Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler carrying a spinoff series on their own. What’s more, while Dutton Ranch’s setting will feel familiar to us, the show’s different location represents a fresh start for Beth and Rip, with different challenges for them to overcome. Freed from her destructive rivalry with step-brother Jamie Dutton, along with the broader corporate and family responsibilities she had in Montana, we can expect Beth to grow in surprising new ways. Meanwhile, Rip will finally get to be the indomitable ranch boss he was always destined to become, after coming into his own as John Dutton’s right hand.
The Show Also Features A Landman Cast Crossover
Beyond Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s Yellowstone return, and the introduction of other high-profile stars into the franchise, Dutton Ranch features a cast member from Taylor Sheridan’s biggest TV Western of the past two years. There was always the possibility that a Yellowstone crossover could happen in Landman at some point, but this crossover is actually happening the other way around. J. R. Villarreal, who played Manuel Lopez in season 1 of Landman, is starring in this Yellowstone spinoff, as a new character known as Azul. The actor is credited as a Dutton Ranch series regular, so we’ll see more of him in this show than we did when he played an oil-drilling rival to Cooper Norris back in 2024.
