Big Change! Taylor Sheridan’s New Yellowstone Show Replaces Kevin Costner’s John Dutton

Kevin Costner’s John Dutton was the heart and soul of the Yellowstone franchise for years, and though his character met an untimely demise in the final season of the acclaimed series, Taylor Sheridan’s newest series in the world of Yellowstone is primed to replace the iconic lead.

With Dutton Ranch coming to Paramount+ next month, the spin-off series will mark the first major step forward in the modern world of Yellowstone storytelling without Costner’s John Dutton at the forefront. The series follows Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler as they navigate a bold new era, and it has found the perfect way to replace the star power of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton.

When Taylor Sheridan’s now legendary Yellowstone series first premiered in June 2018, it was seen, more than anything, as a star vehicle for the iconic Kevin Costner. Costner’s movies, such as Dances with WolvesThe UntouchablesJFK, and Open Range, earned major acclaim, and he was one of a few major Hollywood stars who consistently worked to keep the iconic Western genre alive in the modern era.

With the evolution of television as the newest avenue of prestige storytelling, Yellowstone and Costner set up a new era, thanks to Sheridan. The series followed the Duttons, a Montana ranching family whose interpersonal drama, violent confrontations with enemies from all sides, and consistently surprising character evolutions enthralled audiences for years. Season after season, Yellowstone continually pushed the boundaries of what could be done with the television format, and it reinvigorated interest in Westerns and neo-Westerns in general audiences.

A huge part of Yellowstone‘s initial success came from Kevin Costner’s star power and charisma. He was the face of the franchise, and as John Dutton, the head of the iconic Dutton family, he was front and center for the series’ most shocking moments and bold creative directions. Costner brought gravitas and emotional weight to Yellowstone, and he grounded the series across five iconic seasons.

Unfortunately, though, Costner eventually left Yellowstone to return to film, and after scheduling conflicts and creative differences with Sheridan, John Dutton was killed off in Yellowstone‘s fifth and final season. With so many more stories to tell, so many characters to dive into, and so many more locations to explore, it was only a matter of time before the Yellowstone story continued in one way or another.

Dutton Ranch Replaces Costner’s Singular Protagonist With A Sturdy Ensemble Cast

With Kevin Costner’s John Dutton officially dead, the Yellowstone franchise has struggled to impact audiences on the same level that it once did. Spinoffs set in the Dutton family’s past, like 1883 and 1923, were huge hits with fans of the original series, but there was still a clamoring for stories told in the modern day. Marshals, the first modern spinoff of Yellowstone, left a lot to be desired, and its position as the franchise’s first series to premiere on network television made it feel watered-down and forgettable.

With the upcoming Dutton Ranch, though, the Yellowstone universe is finally paving a new way forward. John’s daughter Beth and her husband Rip Wheeler take center stage as they attempt to navigate a whole new world of power struggles, legacy, and family hardships in the wake of the original Yellowstone‘s finale. Dutton Ranch sees Beth and Rip traveling to Texas, where they come into conflict with a brand-new group of enemies, including the legendary Annette Bening as a ruthless rival rancher.
