After months and months of waiting, we finally have our first look at the newest Yellowstone spinoff, Dutton Ranch, and it’s just as big, bold, shocking and amazing as we had hoped. Below, we break down everything you need to know about the Dutton Ranch trailer, including which part is confusing fans the most. Spoiler alert: It has to do with Texas.
A look at what happened in the ‘Dutton Ranch’ trailer
The Dutton Ranch trailer was released on Monday, March 23. It came after many months of speculation surrounding the show, with questions being raised over whether or not it was still happening. There were also concerns over what the show was going to be about and if it was going to overlap with Marshals, the other new Yellowstone spinoff.
“I just don’t know, in the world of what Marshals [Kayce’s spinoff] is, if Beth [Kelly Reilly] coming in would fit into that quite as well,” director Greg Yaitanes told Collider earlier this month. “Kayce [Luke Grimes] would just naturally fold into Dutton Ranch because there’s a tonal similarity to the original Yellowstone.”
Currently, at least according to the trailer, there is still no word on if there will be a crossover, but we do know when the show is going to be coming out and where it’s going to be set.

At the end of Yellowstone, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) decide to leave the Dutton Yellowstone Ranch behind and move to the middle of nowhere Montana. Because of that, viewers assumed that Dutton Ranch was going to take place in Montana, but in the trailer Rip looks at Beth and says “Welcome to Texas.”
Texas?! Since when are they in Texas? Sadly, we still don’t know the reason for the switch in location, but we do know that it could—and probably will—affect the way Beth and Rip live, especially since the former spent a lot of time in the Lone Star State during Seasons 4 and 5 of Yellowstone.
“As Beth and Rip fight to build a future together—far from the ghosts of Yellowstone—they collide with brutal new realities and a ruthless rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire,” the official synopsis reads. “In South Texas, blood runs deeper, forgiveness is fleeting and the cost of survival might just be your soul.”
Along with the Texas comment, the trailer also featured Finn Little as Beth and Rip’s adopted son Carter and showcased J.R. Villarreal, Annette Bening and Ed Harris in their brand new roles, which were announced prior to its release.
“Dutton Ranch has the best parts of what I loved about Yellowstone,” Yaitanes said in that same Collier interview. “That cast is just so terrific. It had time. It’s artful. It’s just a different kind of show. It’s much more of a drama and a soap.” “I loved Kelly, Cole, Annette and Ed and everybody,” the director continued. “That cast is just so terrific.” You can watch the entire Dutton Ranch trailer below.
