‘Landman’ Season 2: Billy Bob Thornton Drops Exciting News for Fans!

Billy Bob Thornton Talks Filming ‘Landman’ Season 2, Says Sam Elliott Has Joined Cast

Billy Bob Thornton is shedding light on “Landman” season 2 as the series continues to film in and around Fort Worth. Thornton recently spoke with Deadline Hollywood from the Texas set to discuss last season and how things will look heading into this second go-around. Production on the second season began in Cowtown in late March.

In the discussion, which can be viewed here, Thornton spoke about Demi Moore’s expanded role in the new season, having Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in the show and confirmed that “1883” actor Sam Elliott has joined the cast.

Here’s a look at what Thornton said.

Thornton on Demi Moore’s new role in ‘Landman’ season 2

Editor’s note: Spoilers for season 1 of “Landman” follow.

Moore appeared in every episode of “Landman” season 1, although didn’t say much. For most of the season, her character Cami Miller was seen interacting with Monty Miller (Jon Hamm) frequently and Tommy Norris (Thornton) occasionally. Moore saw increased screen time later in the season as Monty recovered from a heart attack. She also discussed the future of the M-TEX Oil company with Tommy.

After Monty’s death in the “Landman” season 1 finale, Thornton said Moore’s character is in charge of the company in the second season. However, while Moore is in charge, Thornton’s character is actually running things since she doesn’t know much about the oil business. More so, Thornton said Tommy knows how to deal with oil people and what deals to take, and which to turn down.

“I’m kind of an executive and a landman, and a family man, in the midst of this tornado,” Thornton said. “It makes for some pretty interesting stuff.”

Despite Tommy’s new position, Thornton said fans shouldn’t expect to see him in a full suit every episode.

“I think the only difference in my wardrobe this year, is that every now and then I’ll throw a sport jacket over my jeans and crummy button up shirt,” Thornton said.

Thornton on Jerry Jones’ ‘fabulous’ performance

In season 1 episode 9, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made a lengthy cameo playing himself. The 82-year-old is seen giving a speech to Monty, who is bedridden after suffering his latest heart attack. Jones talks about getting into the oil business and how that led him to earn enough to purchase the Cowboys and operate the franchise with his family. Thornton’s Tommy is in the background listening into the speech as well.

What made Jones “so good” in that scene was that he was telling his own story, Thornton said. “Landman” co-creator Taylor Sheridan simply told Jones to talk about his oil venture and how that led to the Cowboys.

“It’s a guy sitting there telling us exactly what happened to him in real life, which was pretty moving, I have to say,” Thornton said. “[Jones] did a fabulous job. And I told him, if he ever sells the Cowboys, give us a call.”

Thornton on his old pal Sam Elliott joining ‘Landman’ season 2

New broke in mid-March, via Puck, that Sam Elliott will appear in “Landman” season 2. While Paramount has yet to confirm the casting, there is some precedent as Elliott was a major player in Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” prequel series “1883.” Thornton also appeared in one episode of the show.

In discussion with Deadline, Thornton subtlety confirmed that Elliott had joined the cast after answering a question about working with his old pals Moore and Andy Garcia.

“I go way back with both of them and it’s pretty cool,” Thornton said. “Sam Elliott, I go back to the 80s with. Yes, I’m old.”

Thornton didn’t say anything else about Elliott’s role in the show, beyond confirming that he has joined the cast.
