Brace Yourselves: Yellowstone Star Teases Next Spin-Off So Good, Even Non-Fans Will Be Hooked

Like all of us, Luke Grimes had to say goodbye to the beloved Taylor Sheridan series, Yellowstone, after Season 5. But the Dutton family isn’t quite done yet. Grimes is set to star in Sheridan’s spin-off series, Y: Marshals, a show that Grimes said will “rope the audience in” when watching it. With the new series announced back in May, Grimes has a lot going for him before the show even comes out. Outside of Yellowstone, Grimes is starring in Ari Aster‘s Eddington. He was speaking with PEOPLE about his work as a High West brand ambassador, and they began talking about the series.

Part of the struggle with the new show, which he says “roped me in,” is that Kayce ended Yellowstone happier than expected, and without tension or any real struggles for Kayce’s new life, they didn’t know what the show would end up looking like. “We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable,”

Grimes said. “If it was just like, ‘well, he’s happy’ — we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool. But I’ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting, and it really roped me in, and I think it will rope the audience in as well.”

Grimes told the publication that leaving Yellowstone was a “really bizarre transition,” and that “to go back into it in a new set of circumstances is going to be [a] kind of transition” as well. But he also teased that while this is a Kayce-centric show, there will be some “familiar faces” for fans. “There’s going to be a lot of new faces too, so we’ll see how that all feels.”

Saying Goodbye to ‘Yellowstone’ Wasn’t Easy

Grimes revealed that while it was “really hard” to say goodbye to the flagship show, he also wrapped it while thinking that he wasn’t going to be playing Kayce Dutton again. The youngest son of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), Kayce, ended the series focusing on his family after selling the Dutton family ranch. And for Grimes, he thought that was it for him.

On the last day of shooting, I thought it was my last day as Kayce. It was over to me,” he said. “It was seven years of playing a person that I’ll never see again, except for having his hat and jacket in my closet. It wasn’t until probably three or four months after that that everything started aligning for the [spin-off].”

He went on to say that when he wrapped, it was “a lot bigger of a life moment than I thought it would be. To try to put that show away, it was hard. It was really hard, and I know this is going to sound weird, but it was sort of emotional. It was like losing a family in a way.”

You can see Grimes on Yellowstone. And stay tuned for more news on Y: Marshals.
