Kurt Russell Blindsides Yellowstone Fans With Big News!

After more than a year of speculation, Kurt Russell is officially confirmed to be part of the cast of the upcoming Taylor Sheridan series “The Madison.”

Originally announced as a “Yellowstone” spinoff titled “2024,” the show is said to be “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.”

Previously announced cast members include Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, Matthew Fox, Beau Garrett, Amiah Miller, Alaina Pollack, Ben Schnetzer, Rebecca Spence, Danielle Vasinova and Kevin Zegers. Exact character details are being kept under wraps, but source say Russell would play the husband of Pfeiffer’s character.

Kurt Russell looks on with an angry expression in Tombstone

Before audiences get too excited about Kurt Russell’s casting, there’s a major detail that’s been left out of the report. As of right now, The Madison season 1 has already wrapped filming back in January and is in post-production, which means the series could be released rather soon. This means that Kurt Russell is unlikely to appear in the first season, unless they decide to film additional scenes for him. His arrival will likely be in The Madison season 2, which is already in development and is set to begin filming this Fall, prior to season 1’s release.

Taylor Sheridan and Paramount+ are fairly secretive about their development plans, with numerous Yellowstone spinoffs in development, the franchise’s release timeline isn’t entirely clear. While I wouldn’t be surprised if Kurt Russell makes a brief cameo in season 1, it’s doubtful that he was secretly part of season 1’s filming.

Still, Kurt Russell’s role in The Madison season 2 will be a major attraction for the series, as he continues Sheridan’s streak of shows led by veteran movie stars. Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford, Billy Bob Thornton, and now Kurt Russell. That’s an excellent lineup.

This will be just the second major television role Russell has taken on in recent years. He also starred in the Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” alongside his son, Wyatt Russell. Aside from a voice role in the Marvel animated series “What If…?” Russell has worked exclusively in film since the 1970s, though he did receive an Emmy nomination in 1979 for starring in the TV movie “Elvis.”

Kurt Russell on the red carpet

In addition to his famous roles in films like “Escape From New York” and the sequel “Escape From LA,” as well as “Overboard,” and “The Thing,” Russell fits right into the Sheridan-verse thanks to his many roles in westerns over the years. Those include “Tombstone,” “The Hateful Eight,” and “Bone Tomahawk.” He also appeared in western TV series early in his career, like “The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters” “The Virginian,” and “Gunsmoke.” Russell is also known for his collaborations with Quentin Tarantino, including films such as “The Hateful Eight,” “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood,” and “Death Proof.”

He is repped by UTA.

Sheridan created “The Madison” and serves as executive producer under his Bosque Ranch Productions banner. David C. Glasser, John Linson, Art Linson, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Christina Voros, Michael Friedman, Pfeiffer, Russell, and Keith Cox also executive produce. Paramount Television Studios (formerly MTV Entertainment Studios) and 101 Studios produce along with Bosque Ranch.
