Landman Drops The Tommy Bombshell We All Knew Was Coming

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Landman season 2, episode 9. The penultimate episode of Landman season 2 finally gave Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) the consequence we all saw coming weeks ago. Landman season 2, episode 9 saw Cami and Gallino double down on their plan to rebuild the offshore natural gas rig. Most of the cast of Landman went to Louisiana for a rig launching party, and while they were there, Cami finally did what she’s been gearing up to do for weeks now.

Cami Miller Fired Tommy Norris As M-Tex President

After weeks of being annoyed by him, Cami finally fired Tommy as president of M-Tex in Landman season 2, episode 9. As Cami explained, she didn’t want the president of M-Tex to be “averse” to the gambling and risk that is essential to wildcatting and making a profit in the oil industry. That decision was a long time coming: Tommy wasn’t cut out for the constant meetings being president entailed, and all those responsibilities were taking away from his ability to be a landman.

While Cami’s motivations for firing Tommy are clear, what isn’t as clear is where he stands. Cami only fired Tommy, and she didn’t explain if that was from M-Tex entirely or just from his executive position. Presumably, Tommy is no longer president of M-Tex, but he’ll still be acting as landman and the vice president of operations. She may not like his lack of gambling fervor, but Cami still needs Tommy to run M-Tex on the ground.

There is, however, a chance that Cami actually did fire Tommy entirely. Tommy has previously explained that Cami thinks he’s a “loser” because of how he went bankrupt during the 2008 financial crash while Monty survived. Based on the changes Cami has been going through — like getting more comfortable in her role and deciding she likes the thrill of the gamble — she may not want Tommy to be part of M-Tex at all. Only time will tell if Tommy still has a job.

What Tommy Getting Fired Means For Landman

Cami firing Tommy should have some massive implications for the future of Landman. Assuming Tommy is still going to act as M-Tex’s landman, his change in position could put a lot of strain on his relationship with Angela. Angela decided she wanted to move to Fort Worth to be near Ainsley at TCU, but if Tommy has to be landman full-time again, he’ll have to stay in Midland. Angela won’t like that, and their ongoing reconciliation could take a setback.

If Tommy really did get fired from M-Tex entirely, that has even larger implications for Landman. Cooper only recently got his job at M-Tex back, and if Tommy’s not part of the company anymore, it seems likely that Cooper will be out of a job as well. Additionally, Angela leads a very expensive lifestyle, and if Tommy’s non-presidential salary can’t support it, that could put even more strain on their relationship. TL’s recently acquired “physical therapy” sessions would also probably stop.

There is, however, a chance that none of those consequences come to light because of Gallino. Gallino loves Tommy; he considers Tommy a worth adversary, they have a shared history, Gallino has leverage over both him and Cooper, and he’s expressed his desire to work with Tommy several times in the past. Gallino may decide to hire Tommy himself to head up his future oil industry investments, assuming Cami really did fire him entirely.
