Landman Season 2 Episode 5 Ending Explained

Landman season 2, episode 5 got right back into the thick of M-Tex’s financial problems, Gallino’s attempts to manipulate Tommy, and Cooper’s budding oil company. After the more emotional moments of Landman season 2, episode 4, this week’s episode dove right back into the complex problems facing the entire cast of Landman. The proverbial heat has been turned up, and Landman season 2 is getting more tense than ever before. With all the new developments from this week’s episode, there’s a good reason to go back over some of the biggest moments and offer a bit more explanation. Things like TL Norris settling into Tommy’s home and the joyful pirate dinner that ended the episode were straightforward, but some of the financial and legal concerns of the episode were fairly dense. That being said, here are the biggest events from Landman season 2, episode 5.

Why Cami Is Still Taking Gallino’s Money In Landman Season 2 Explained

One of the last scenes of Landman season 2, episode 5 was a huge bombshell: Cami is still taking Gallino’s money even after Tommy explained his ties to the cartel. Previously, it was easy to assume that Cami was dealing with Gallino (as Danny Morrell) because she didn’t know who he really was. It was thought that once Tommy told her of his criminal dealings, she would decide to. There are a few compelling reasons why Cami is working with Gallino. The most important is that Gallino is M-Tex’s only hope. M-Tex is under a “punitively aggressive” timeline to rebuild the offshore gas rig. The insurance firm’s lawyers are pressing hard on M-Tex, and if Cami and Tommy don’t comply, M-Tex will be destroyed by legal fees and court cases. M-Tex and Cami need money quickly, and Gallino is offering it.

Additionally, as Gallino explained, Cami and Tommy can’t get a traditional business loan. The terms wouldn’t be in their favor, and within a few years, M-Tex would default on its loans and be sold off in pieces. Gallino’s money is the only way Cami gets to keep M-Tex intact and herself as the principal owner. She won’t even consider anything else, because she wants to “win” and because she doesn’t want to disgrace Monty’s legacy and company. She doesn’t care if the money is dirty, only if it can save Monty’s memory. There’s also a chance that Cami simply doesn’t understand the gravity of the situation she’s in. Tommy told her that he’s the head of a cartel, but Cami said that he didn’t know where Gallino’s money comes from. She may also be overestimating Nate and Rebecca’s ability to shield her and M-Tex from any legal fallout in being a money laundering partner of a drug cartel. Plus, she’s only ever met Dan Morrell, so it may be hard for her to imagine him being a vicious gangster.

Ariana Tested Cooper Again By Having Him Ask Her Father’s Permission To Marry Him

Another big focus of Landman season 2, episode 5 was Cooper and Ariana’s ongoing relationship problems. This episode, Ariana asked Cooper to drive out to Corpus Christi so he could ask for her father’s blessing to marry her. When Cooper arrived, however, Ariana’s father informed Cooper that she didn’t actually need his blessing and that she was just testing him and his devotion again. As Ariana explained, she doesn’t take relationships or marriage lightly. She needs to be sure that Cooper really loves her and that he’s as devoted as he is, so she tested him again. It was a good test, too; Corpus Christi is a seven-hour drive from Midland, Texas, and Ariana’s father is a very scary-looking man. Ariana likely thought no one would drive that far and ask a very intimidating person to marry their daughter if they weren’t truly in love.

Why Tommy Is Buying Cooper’s Land & Giving Him A Job Explained

Cooper also had a more personal development in this week’s episode of Landman. During a meeting with his son, Tommy informed Cooper that M-Tex was going to buy all the oil wells he dug and that he’d be giving Cooper a job running a work crew for him. Cooper’s wells all hit, however, and he was very excited about making huge amounts of money on his gamble, so it was a bit confusing that he agreed to sell the land and gain no profit. Luckily, Tommy explained the situation very well. Cooper messed up, and this buyout is Tommy’s way of saving him. Cooper began drilling without actually getting any money from Gallino or Sonrisa, just using his own name and Tommy’s reputation. To save Cooper from being saddled with crippling debt, a ruined reputation, and an obligation to repay a drug kingpin, Tommy took over the financial obligation. As for the job portion of the deal, Tommy also explained his reasoning. Cooper has great instincts and the right attitude to be a big success in the oil industry, but he has almost no practical knowledge. A more experienced oil tycoon wouldn’t have run into half the problems Cooper did. Tommy gave Cooper a job — and Cooper accepted — because he still has to learn the ropes of the industry before he can make it on his own.

Tommy Is Having Trouble As M-Tex’s President & Landman

Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy in Landman episode 4, season 2Emerson Miller / Paramount+

The last big development of Landman season 2, episode 5 centered around Tommy. Throughout the episode, Tommy was having problems juggling his dual roles as M-Tex’s president and landman. Nate, Dale, and others weren’t telling him about things like the H2S gas leak and the truck crash until well after the fact. He also spent several hours driving all around Texas trying to get from crash sites to meetings. Tommy simply can’t handle being both president and landman. Either one of those jobs would be a lot for a single person, and no one would be able to do both at the same time. By showing us how much Tommy is struggling, Landman may be gearing up for Tommy to hire a new landman to handle operations in his stead. He needs his mind free of distractions to handle M-Tex’s many financial and legal troubles and Gallino at the same time. If Landman really is gearing up to introduce a new landman for M-Tex, one character fits the bill better than anyone else: Rebecca’s mysterious love interest, Charlie. Charlie explained that he already works in the oil fields, his house seemed nice enough to imply he had a higher income than a regular roughneck, and Guy Burnet has the star power to play such an important character. Charlie fits all the necessary criteria to be Landman‘s new landman in Tommy’s place.
