Landman Season 2 Finale: Tommy’s New Oil Company Explained

Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) started a new oil company in the finale of Landman season 2, and getting to know CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle should be important. After Tommy was fired from M-Tex in Landman season 2, episode 9, it was left to the finale to explain how the show could go on. Though it seemed like Tommy might go back to being a regular landman for Cami (Demi Moore), he had another trick up his sleeve.

Instead of taking a new job at Chevron or another oil company, Tommy decided to see if he had “one more home run” left in him, and took a chance on starting his own oil company. Now that it’s clear that Tommy is done with M-Tex, and since Landman season 3 has already been confirmed, getting to know Tommy’s new oil company is going to be crucial to understanding what’s next for the show.

Instead of taking a job at another oil company, Tommy made a few big moves to start his own oil company. First, he had Nate dissolve the contract that gave Cooper’s land leases over to M-Tex, as Cooper didn’t have an attorney present. M-Tex had still paid off the land buyout, however, so Tommy then went to Gallino (Andy Garcia) to secure $44 million to pay M-Tex back with interest. He also got $18 million to drill new wells on the land.

Convincing Gallino to give him the money was easier said than done, however. Gallino has a sizable investment in M-Tex, and Tommy has very vocally opposed him in the past. Tommy was able to convince Gallino by showing him that Cooper’s idea was “too big to fail,” whereas Cami’s plan to drill the offshore natural gas rig was rife with problems and risk. He essentially told Gallino that investing in him was a way to recoup whatever he would likely lose by backing Cami. Once Tommy had the funding from Gallino secured, he had to come up with a name for his oil company on the spot. Since two corporations can’t have the same name, and since Tommy didn’t have time to make sure he had a valid name before Gallino made out the check, he chose CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle. CTT isn’t actually involved in cattle (yet), but Tommy thought that part of the name was too stupid to be in use by another company.

Tommy then went to inform his friends and family about CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle and reveal that it’s not just his company, it’s a Norris family business. Most of the cast of Landman got executive positions at CTT, though Cooper is the highest-ranking board member in the entire company. He also laid out the business plan: CTT is going to continue drilling on the land Cooper originally bought in Landman season 1, as he had already hit oil six times.

What Happens To Cami & M-Tex In Landman Season 3

CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle’s future seems fairly clear: Tommy, Cooper, and TL are going to have to work together as a family to make the company work and turn it into a success story. What isn’t as clear is Cami and M-Tex’s fate in Landman season 3. After all, Cami’s plan to rebuild the offshore rig only has a 10% chance of success, and Tommy listed out several problems that could hinder them even if they do find gas.

More likely than not, Cami’s gamble won’t pay off, and M-Tex is either going to be sold or go bankrupt in Landman season 3. Nate tried to convince Cami to sell the company while she still can, as Monty’s plan was always to sell the company for a profit. She may finally listen to reason in time, but it’s also very possible that she sees her gamble through to the end and goes down with the sinking ship that is M-Tex. Even if M-Tex does go bankrupt, however, Cami has a golden parachute. Before he died, Monty left a ginormous trust fund for Cami and their children. Even if the offshore gas rig gamble fails and she loses M-Tex, Cami will still be able to live a life of luxury. Either way, it looks like Cami and M-Tex are going to have a much smaller role in Landman season 3 as CTT Oil Exploration & Cattle takes their spot as the show’s focus.
