Landman Season 2 Reportedly Casts New Main Character As Jon Hamm’s Return Is In Doubt

A new Landman season 2 casting report addresses Jon Hamm’s status and reveals a new star has been cast in a main role. Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace’s hit Paramount+ show is based on Wallace’s podcast Boomtown, and follows Billy Bob Thronton’s Tommy Wallace, as he navigates the oil fields of West Texas.

The show has enjoyed critical acclaim, with Landman season 1 concluding in January 2025. In March 2025, Paramount renewed Landman season 2, and the season is set to see a shakeup among the cast of the show.

Per a report in Matt Belloni’s newsletter for PuckSam Elliott has joined the cast in an undisclosed main character role. Hamm, meanwhile, was only contracted for season 1, and while there’s no confirmation of his status, Belloni positions him as unlikely to return. He notes that the plan was always to have Demi Moore step into a more prominent role in season 2 and notes that Hamm’s own show, Your Friends and Neighbors, is debuting on Apple TV+ on April 11.

What This Means For Landman Season 2

The Casting Shakeup May Prove Risky, But The Show Could See A Boom

Elliott will be a strong addition to the cast of Landman, as a seasoned performer with plenty of gravitas. The casting will see Elliott team up again with Sheridan, after starring in Yellowstone prequel show 1883, which also featured Thornton in a guest role.

Hamm’s may not be confirmed, but a one-season contract, coupled with his character Monty’s season 1 finale death, make it unlikely he will return. Moore’s increased role as Cami should be a huge boost for the show, following her successful awards season run for The Substance, and she should be a prominent presence in the season.

Landman could become a show with something to say, populated by a wealth of engaging, morally grey characters…

While Landman season 2 story details are under wraps right now, the casting shakeup could prove decisive for the narrative direction the season will take. Tensions will be higher than ever in season 2, with the fallout from Monty’s death, Cami’s risky oil drilling plan, and the introduction of a potential new player in Elliott’s character, not to mention Gallino and the cartel’s continued presence. These are all important plot points that could make for plenty of drama in the new season.

Our Verdict On Landman Season 2

This Could Be The Season The Show ReallyTakes Off

Landman is one of the most compelling and tense shows currently on streaming and contains many of Sheridan’s classic hallmarks. Season 1 saw the show establishing itself as a strong exploration of the oil industry, and the state of Texas, but season 2 could be where the series really flexes its muscles.

Landman could become a show with something to say, populated by a wealth of engaging, morally grey characters, and the addition of Elliott, and expansion of Moore’s role, are key steps toward that for Landman season 2.
