One of Tommy’s biggest problems connects to his son Cooper, who’s shown throughout season 1 that he has a penchant for finding drama. In just nine episodes, Cooper has joined two oil crews, witnessed an explosion that killed three men, gotten beaten up, and formed a romantic connection with one of the men’s widows.
Long story short, Cooper has gotten around, and Landman episode 9’s ending saw him revealing his plan for long-term success, which should carry over into the show’s main narrative for season 2.
Cooper’s Oil Plan Could Be Great For Him In Season 2
Cooper’s Plan Should Create Some Compelling Drama
To put it simply, Cooper’s plan to make money in the oil industry is to find dozens of smaller wells that bigger companies aren’t utilizing. They aren’t worth the difficulty alone, but as a collection, they might be worthwhile. At least, that’s what Cooper thinks.
Whether he tries and fails or tries and succeeds, this is a process that should take some time, and it could yield some interesting drama. For the first time in a few episodes, Cooper has something to do that’s separate from his storyline with Ariana, though she can still play a prominent role.
The best part of Cooper entering the oil industry with a scheme like this is that he’s bound to come across Tommy at some point. Now that Tommy has an elevated role with M-Tex, he’s going to have a lot more at stake and could easily end up with a business rivalry.
Either way, him finding success without his father’s help should create some compelling inter-family drama. Taylor Sheridan is best known for his shows’ studies of complex family dynamics, so it would be on-brand to see the Norris boys divided by a further wedge.
