‘Marshals’ Trailer Appears to Confirm Monica’s Shocking Death in Kayce Dutton ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff

The official trailer for Yellowstone spinoff Marshals appeared to confirm the death of Kayce Dutton’s wife, Monica, previously played by Kelsey Asbille.

The first Yellowstone sequel series may already be shooting itself in the foot weeks before its premiere. Y: Marshals is the first of several spinoff shows set to continue the story of Taylor Sheridan’s hit neo-Western series after its finale in 2024. Luke Grimes returns as Kayce Dutton, who takes a job with the U.S. Marshals in hopes of starting a new chapter of his life. Several key Yellowstone characters are set to return alongside Kayce Dutton in Y: Marshals, including Gil Birmingham’s Thomas Rainwater. The spinoff is almost certainly hiding several other exciting cameos from the original show, but one character is conspicuously absent. The latest trailer teases this character’s tragic fate–and it could be a miserable mistake that will doom the new Yellowstone spinoff before it even begins.

So far, Kelsey Asbille has not been confirmed to return for the upcoming Yellowstone spinoff. With the series premiere on March 1, her absence becomes more glaring by the day. At this point, it is clear that she isn’t part of the show’s main cast, but even a guest appearance seems off the table as the premiere gets closer. While her absence would be bad enough, the latest promotional material for Y: Marshals suggests that the show is going to make the matter even worse.

Will Y: Marshals Kill Off Monica Dutton?

CBS released a first look at the series on Friday, which shows Kayce (Luke Grimes) in mourning following a personal loss. While Yellowstone fans know Kayce’s father, John (Kevin Costner), died in the Paramount Network show’s fifth and final season, a scene in the Marshals sneak peek has Kayce and son Tate (Brecken Merrill) watching a body be covered up in their home. A moment at the end of the trailer shows Kayce with a woman — who is presumably meant to be Monica — in what seems to be either a flashback or a dream sequence. Asbille doesn’t make an onscreen appearance, which comes after Yellowstone fans previously assumed her character could be written out in the spinoff series.

The trailer implies that this loss is what pushes Kayce to start over as a Marshal. Yellowstone fans know that there is only one death that would push him this far. Y: Marshals is most likely about to kill off Monica Long-Dutton in its series premiere. Judging from the promotional material so far, the character will die off-screen sometime between the events of the Yellowstone finale and the Y: Marshals premiere. Audiences shouldn’t expect Kelsey Asbille to reprise her role, either. If this is the case, the upcoming Yellowstone spinoff may be making a mistake from which it will never recover.

Yellowstone Is Making a Major Mistake With Y: Marshals

Killing off Monica Long-Dutton would be a critical mistake for Y: Marshals just as it is getting started. Doing so would rob audiences of a strong female character whom they have grown to love over five seasons of television. Kelsey Asbille is a highlight of the original Yellowstone, and killing her character off-screen would be a massive disservice to her legacy. It would also make Yellowstone much harder to rewatch in retrospect, knowing the unfair fate that awaits Monica in the spinoff. Monica’s death would also be an insult to Kayce Dutton’s storyline throughout all of Yellowstone. From the very beginning, Kayce’s arc was about choosing between his blood and the family he built for himself. His parents and siblings represent a side of Kayce’s life that he longs to leave behind, buried under generational trauma and blood. Monica and their son, Tate, represent the life he always wanted for himself.

Throughout the series, Kayce struggles with this choice but eventually comes to realize that he can only have one or the other. A premonition tells him that the ranch would be “the end” of his relationship with Monica and Tate. This is ultimately what leads him to sell the ranch back to Thomas Rainwater, securing his future with his family. Killing off Monica now would completely refute Kayce’s emotional ending in Yellowstone, unnecessarily resetting his character for no other purpose but to get another show out of it. Taylor Sheridan and CBS need to be careful with how they approach Y: Marshals and other upcoming Yellowstone spinoffs. If the plots of these sequel series make the original worse in retrospect, it might not be worth continuing the franchise. Monica Dutton’s fate hasn’t been officially confirmed, and likely won’t be until Marshals premieres. Still, the recent trailers should fill fans with concern for one of their favorite Yellowstone characters.
