Slap Taylor Sheridan’s name on a TV show and it’s going to capture the attention of the masses. Whether it’s Yellowstone or any of the spinoffs, or an original like Landman (which pulled back the curtain on the oil industry for the very first time), people tune in when Sheridan is involved.
Why? Other than the Yellowstone creator simply not missing, I believe people like the familiarness that Sheridan shows have across the board. Anytime you turn on one of his creations, you undoubtedly know that it’s his. And that keeps people coming back… even when he shifts gears and dives into the Texas oil industry.
Landman rocketed to the top of streaming during its first season. A combination of the stellar cast (Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, and Ali Larter, among others) and viral moments made for a perfect storm. It even set a streaming record for Paramount+, as more than 14.9 million people tuned in during the first four weeks to watch the drama surrounding Texas’ oil boom.
Those viewers stuck around for Season 2.
The show’s sophomore run wasn’t exactly what people were expecting. Should they have been prepared for a slower, more family-focused season? Considering Billy Bob Thornton warned that Season 2 would be a “slow burn” prior to the second season’s premiere, I’d say yes.
But despite the pacing, and some fans labeling the show as “unwatchable” during portions of Season 2… people kept watching. Some might have stayed tuned in hoping it would turn the corner (it eventually did with the last couple episodes). Others might have been unable to look away because it was so bad. Regardless of what was going on with the second season and its viewers, the show continued to put up numbers.
And I know I’ve already mentioned the record-breaking power of Landman, but I have to bring it up again, because the Season 2 finale viewership will go down in the record books.
Landman’s Season 2 finale set a Paramount+ record for original series finale. The show’s final episode of the second season – titled “Tragedy and Flies” – aired on January 18. In its first two days of availability on the streaming service, more than 14.8 million people watched it all around the globe. That ended up being a 70% increase when compared to Season 1’s finale.
Those numbers are remarkable, and almost unheard of in the modern day (with how streaming has changed the way people consumer television). And if you compare it to Season 1’s numbers during its first four weeks… Landman’s Season 2 finale brought in the same viewership in just two days. And just for reference, Yellowstone aired on Paramount Network, not the streaming platform, but the Yellowstone series finale hit 13.1 million viewers.
So it’s no surprise that Landman Season 3 is already on the way. If they stick to their normal shoot schedule, they should be filming in April or so, which would mean that the third season would premiere sometime in late 2026 (as long as there aren’t any delays). Taylor Sheridan would be smart to keep the momentum rolling, and I’d be willing to bet that Season 3 will break another record for Paramount+ once it’s available.
