Taylor Sheridan’s Upcoming Yellowstone Spinoffs Explained: 1944, 6666, Y Marshals & More

The Yellowstone franchise isn’t done yet after 1923’s controversial finale, and Taylor Sheridan has a long way to go with several more spinoff series. Here’s everything we know about Sheridan’s upcoming projects so far. Taylor Sheridan’s flagship series Yellowstone didn’t have the best ending despite a very successful start, but there’s a whole collection of already existing and future shows that will continue the Western drama’s legacy.

Now that Yellowstone’s prequels 1883 and 1923 are both wrapped up, there’s more to see in the Dutton family’s past — however, this isn’t what Sheridan’s Western universe will be limited to. With the director now planning at least four new spinoff series, one of those will also follow the events after Yellowstone’s finale, bringing back one of the entire franchise’s favorite couples.

So Far, Yellowstone Only Has One More Prequel Show Planned

As the time gap between 1923 and Yellowstone’s timelines remains unexplored, Sheridan’s next prequel series titled 1944 will be the one to fill the void. There’s not so much to know about the plot details yet, but it’s safe to say the events will unfold sometime in the year of 1944, marking roughly twenty years since 1923’s finale.

The franchise’s fans also believe the show will now focus on the story of Spencer and Alex’s son John, who most likely will turn out to be John Dutton II, the father of Kevin Costner’s character in Yellowstone.

Additionally, the characters also might have to deal with the repercussions of the ongoing World War II, with John potentially taking part in it as a soldier.

Yellowstone’s 4 Sequel Shows, Explained

It’s not only the Duttons’ past, but also their life in the present day that Sheridan wants to take a closer look at.

First, there’s a series titled 6666 which makes a direct reference to Yellowstone’s famous Four Sixes Ranch where Jimmy Hurdstrom was sent in the original show’s season 4. The series itself, however, so far remains on hold, though two others keep receiving updates.

Another present-day spinoff to Yellowstone, The Madison will focus on another family instead, following the Clyburns as they move from New York City to relatively rural Montana where they will potentially encounter the Duttons at some point.

Lastly, there’s another spinoffs which has just received several major updates confirmed by Cole Hauser, who played the enigmatic ranch hand Rip Wheeler in the original series and is now reportedly slated as a lead in a planned spinoff series this fall, took to Fox News this week to speak out about the vanishingly few details about the series that have escaped thus far.

“Well, first of all, it’s not Dutton Ranch,” Hauser said. “That’s not the name of it.” His comments follow reporting in recent weeks that indicated that the show is currently operating under the working title Dutton Ranch. The series might become the most intriguing instalment for Yellowstone’s fans yet as it will delve into all the drama that happens behind closed doors of Beth and Rip’s ranch house.

CBS has ordered the Yellowstone sequel Y: Marshals (working title) for its midseason lineup. The new drama will feature Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton, who joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals. The official logline has Kayce “combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

It will air on Sundays at 9 P.M.
