Two Generations Of Yellowstone’s Duttons Will Unite For New Western Movie

Two generations of Yellowstone‘s Dutton family will unite for a new Western movie.

The Yellowstone franchise follows several generations of the Dutton family, from the main series set during the present day to the two prequels, 1883 and 1923, set during the eponymous years. Now, two Yellowstone stars are set to make a spiritual Dutton reunion.

According to DeadlineJosh Lucas will join Brandon Sklenar in an upcoming Western thriller, The RescueBoth actors have strong ties to the Yellowstone franchise, with Lucas playing a younger version of John Dutton III in the main series and Sklenar portraying Spencer Dutton in 1923. Other cast members joining the movie include Nick Searcy, Lorelei Olivia Mote, Austin Amelio, Spencer Treat Clark, Tim Blake Nelson, and Josh Duhamel.

In the prequel, it turns out that Spencer was the grandfather of John Dutton III, who is played by Kevin Costner in the older version. Neither star shared scenes in their respective series, so the new movie marks their spiritual union.

Tim Blake Nelson, Josh Duhamel, Nick Searcy, Lorelei Olivia Mote, Austin Amelio, and Spencer Treat Clark have also joined the cast of The Rescue. The film, which was first announced in December 2025, already united two Yellowstone franchise stars in Sklenar and Hassie Harrison, the latter of whom played the ranch hand Laramie in the main series.

Directed by Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry), with a script written by John Fusco (The Highwaymen), the logline for The Rescue is being kept under wraps, but it has been described as a modern-day Western in which a rodeo cowboy’s skills are put to the test outside the arena.

The Rescue had already been a top priority during development at Skydance before the Skydance–Paramount merger, and it is among the first films approved under the new leadership. Ponciroli is also producing the Western movie alongside Shannon Houchins and Cliff Roberts, with Down Home executive producing.

The Rescue is currently in production and has been set for a release date on January 29, 2027.
