‘Y: Marshals’: Everything To Know So Far About The Most Unusual ‘Yellowstone’ Spin Off Series
Yellowstone wasn’t over when Taylor Sheridan decided to kill John Dutton or have Kayce sell the ranch to the Broken Rock Reservation. Nope, plenty more neo-Western vibes are yet to come with the recent 1923 series finale pointing toward the newly announced 1944 prequel series. Additionally, The Madison will be a part of the Yellowstone universe that takes place after the main series, and the Beth and Rip spin off is in active development. Now, the first teaser trailer for a spin-off featuring Kayce Dutton, the tough-yet-sensitive Dutton hunk, has dropped, and fans are over the moon! Check out everything we can expect from this exciting new series.
‘Y: Marshals’ trailer out now
While we’ve only been fed a 10-second clip giving a glimpse at what’s in store, it’s enough for us! Shared by CBS, the trailer kicks off with Kayce and a team of his fellow U.S. Marshals sitting atop their horses. “I’m changing paths,” says Kayce, portrayed by Luke Grimes, in the clip. “Trying to find a new beginning.” What that new beginning holds is unknown to us, but we can only guess that it’s going to be juicy! CBS shared the trailer to their official Instagram account, and the comments were quickly flooded, with thousands expressing their excitement over this next chapter. “The show is going to be so rad,” wrote actor Bart Johnson, known for his work in films like the High School Musical series. “I auditioned for one of the lead guys and I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a job so bad in my life.” Another excited user shared, “CANNOT WAIT!!! There are definitely some characters that can easily be developed into a series like this—Kayce is my most favorite character ever on the Yellowstone show—eagerly awaiting.” It’s safe to say Luke Grimes won over Yellowstone fans during his run on the series!

Plot
To be fair, the green lighting of this spin off wasn’t completely a surprise because Deadline reported in March that CBS was “eying” a Luke Grimes-starring “procedural” series that would revolve around his Yellowstone character, ex-Navy SEAL Kayce Dutton. The more “unusual” aspect of this series is that Taylor Sheridan himself might not be too involved, which runs counter to most other series in his stable (either Yellowstone-linked or standalone) and confirms that the writing bunker actually does have its limits. Additionally, this series will make its home on CBS but will stream on Paramount Plus.
As Variety now reports via CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach, they will “take what we can get” from Sheridan’s availability, and this is how the show landed at CBS: “I think all of our shows right now are both streaming and linear. That’s what we’re focused on, is trying to make our shows work on both platforms. It certainly did occur to us that the show will do really well on streaming, because all the Taylor shows have. But ‘Yellowstone’ and “Tulsa King’ also did really well for us when we aired them on the network. So, in terms of Taylor’s involvement, we’re still early in the process. He’s a very busy guy, but we’ll take what we can get.”
According to Deadline, showrunner Spencer Hudnut developed the series while working toward both Grimes’ involvement and Sheridan’s approval. And as Yellowstone devotees know, the Duttons’ deal with the Broken Rock tribe allowed Kayce to continue living on a small portion of the land with Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and Tate (Brecken Merrill), although CBS has not revealed whether either of those characters will be part of Y: Marshals or if any part of the show will take place at Kayce’s home. This might be disorienting since the Yellowstone saga has largely revolved around the fear of losing the ranch, but now, Kayce is kind-of a free agent, which points toward new horizons.
“We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable,” Grimes told People. “If it was just like, ‘well, he’s happy’—we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool. But I’ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting and it really roped me in and I think it will rope the audience in as well.”
Cast
Joining Luke Grimes as series regulars are Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater), Mo Brings Plenty (Mo), and Brecken Merrill (Tate Dutton). They’ll all be reprising their beloved roles from the flagship series and since Tate is officially back, fans can count on some new Dutton family drama. Also stepping into Taylor Sheridan’s ever-growing universe are Arielle Kebbel (Rescue: HI-Surf), Ash Santos (Pulse), and Tatanka Means (Reservation Dogs) as new series regulars. Brett Cullen has also been cast in a recurring role. And let’s not forget Logan Marshal-Green, who was previously announced as a lead opposite Luke Grimes.
Release Date
That’s a tricky one. The Madison will arrive sometime in 2025. Presumably, the 1944 prequel will come next, but Y: Marshals could be a semi-concurrent release because multiple Taylor Sheridan shows frequently run at the same time. 2026 is possible, but probably on the late side.
