‘Yellowstone’ Producer Teases Brutal New Spinoff — Fans Aren’t Ready

The original Yellowstone series may have ended in 2024, but the franchise is far from over. After 1883 and 1923, a new spinoff called Marshals just premiered on CBS, and The Dutton Ranch is currently filming season 1 in Texas.

Marshals premiered to a largely negative reception on CBS, with many viewers unhappy with the direction the Yellowstone spinoff has taken Kayce Dutton in. This is a complaint that the franchise’s other sequel spinoff, The Dutton Ranch, seems destined to avoid, as producer David Glasser recently revealed that the Beth and Rip spinoff will be just like the original Yellowstone in terms of tone and craziness.

Now Yellowstone producer David Glasser has revealed that The Dutton Ranch will continue the franchise’s tradition of featuring several deaths and a lot of “crazy” and intense scenes. “These shows always, for us, are a lot of dead bodies, a lot of people getting shot, a lot of crazy stuff happening,” he explained to Entertainment Tonight while attending the premiere of Marshals. Just when viewers think the creative team “can’t turn it up a notch, we do.”

Glasser added that The Dutton Ranch gives the producers and writers the ability to explore Beth and Rip’s lives on a deeper level and for audiences to see these characters “mature” and “grow.”

“Ah, that’s in the works right now. I just left a set in Texas, flew here today. So that’s deep in the weeds right now, but it’s going to be exciting, a way to sort of explore the characters but also mature the characters. And I think that’s the nice thing. We all want to be with them on the ride, but we also want to see them grow. And a lot of fun. I mean, these shows always, for us, are a lot of dead bodies, a lot of people getting shot, a lot of crazy stuff happening, and just when you think we can’t turn it up a notch, we do.”

The Yellowstone franchise has now expanded further via Marshals, which stars Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton. Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty, and Gil Birmingham also returned after playing Tate Dutton, Mo and Thomas Rainwater, respectively, on the original series. The CBS drama centers on Kayce’s new life with a U.S. Marshals unit.

Marshals currently has a critic score of 45% and an audience score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. By comparison, the first two Yellowstone spinoffs have an average critic score of 89% and 94%, respectively.

Despite the underwhelming start to Marshals, the franchise is moving full steam ahead, with filming still underway on The Dutton Ranch, which will see Yellowstone stars Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Finn Little return as Beth, Rip, and Carter. Other cast members include Annette Bening, Ed Harris, Jai Courtney, Natalie Alyn Lind, Marc Menchaca, Juan Pablo Raba, and J.R. Villarreal, with Chad Feehan as showrunner.

Based on Glasser’s latest comments teasing “a lot of dead bodies,” none of their characters are safe. Lee Dutton, Fred Myers, Samantha Long, Sarah Nguyen, Dirk Hurdstram, Wade Morrow, Emmett Walsh, Sarah Atwood, and John Dutton III are some of the many characters who have died in the Yellowstone franchise so far, and viewers should expect that tradition to continue on The Dutton Ranch.

A premiere date has not been announced yet, but The Dutton Ranch is expected to debut sometime in 2026 on Paramount+.
