‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Takes A Major Step Forward

Another Yellowstone spinoff has been confirmed and has taken a huge step forward as Luke Grimes is confirmed to be returning. That’s right, alongside all these other Yellowstone related projects, we have a name, a premise, and a cast member for one that’s only recently been greenlit.

Variety has been doing a lot of heavy lifting in sniffing out and reporting on the developments. We can now say for sure that Luke Grimes will return as Kayce Dutton in Y: Marshals. I imagine the ‘Y’ stands for ‘Yellowstone,’ so the name of the series comes across as a Yellowstone sequel of sorts. As Y: Marshals follows Kayce Dutton, who sold the majority of the Dutton Ranch off in the show’s finale, it makes sense for this to be the spiritual sequel, where everything else is either a spin-off or a prequel.

Although don’t expect more of the same. The storyline here seems very far removed from what fans may be used to with Yellowstone. Although a spiritual sequel, it follows Kayce, not the Dutton family.

The Premise Of The New ‘Yellowstone’ Spin-Off Is Wild

The outlet shared the official logline of the show: “With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

Damn.

Apparently, CBS has given Y: Marshals 13 episodes. They plan to shoot this summer so the show can air in the summer of 2026. We’ve got a while to wait still, but before we know it, we can sit down every Saturday night and enjoy another Yellowstone story.

Spencer Hudnut is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the spiritual successor. Taylor Sheridan will be as involved as his busy schedule allows, said Amy Reisenbach (CBS Entertainment president). “We’ll take what we can get,” she said, commenting on Sheridan’s involvement. This reminds me of the time his absence caused a damn mutiny… so we’ll see how this goes.

What Luke Grimes Said About His Yellowstone Spinoff, Y: Marshals

According to Grimes, “nobody wanted it to be over” when it came to Yellowstone. So, when he told that to People, I started to get hopeful that some fan favorite characters could come back. Then, to make matters better, he confirmed that some “familiar faces” will return too, as he stated:

It will be weird. There’s going to be some familiar faces, but there’s going to be a lot of new faces too, so we’ll see how that all feels.

So, that’s very exciting! And now I’m ultra curious to see who will be along for Kayce’s next ride. Plus, with Rip and Beth getting a spinoff that should be released right before Y: Marshals, it’s unclear how the Yellowstone cast will be split among the shows, and I’m very interested in that as well.
