Yellowstone 1923’s second episode reintroduced a character from season one, Zane Davis, who was arrested for his interracial relationship with Alice Chow

The Yellowstone prequel series 1923 has returned with episode two on The Paramount Network and Paramount Plus, bringing with it an intriguing twist from the first season. The latest instalment saw Harrison Ford’s character, Jacob Dutton, visit town for errands and discuss the troubled fate of Zane Davis (played by Brian Geraghty) with a local judge.
After sustaining a severe injury, Zane found himself hospitalized, while his family grappled with their own predicament—arrest and detainment. Seeking to unburden the State, Jacob suggested assuming custody of the Davis family.
Described as the ‘Rip Wheeler’ of this era, Zane is a deeply committed foreman at the iconic Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Alongside his wife Alice Chow (portrayed by Joy Osmanski) and their two children Matthew and Madelyn, Zane navigates trials in a world less than kind to their interracial union.
The season one finale shockingly revealed that Zane’s marriage to Alice, who is Asian, led to their apprehension under Montana’s anti-miscegenation laws—an attempt to defend his wife’s honour marred by the prejudices of the time.

Brian Geraghty expressed the emotional weight of the storyline, sharing with Woman’s World: “It’s a meaningful storyline for me because it’s actually personal in my own life. I had the privilege to learn about that and what it would have been like or what it’s like today.
“And I think it mirrors, in ways, what we’re going through as a nation and what we’ll always go through, which is segregation and racism.”
Zane’s arrest has left fans of the show on tenterhooks, as he was carted off to Bozeman, Montana, to face trial, sparking widespread speculation about his future.
The actor behind the character delved into the uncertainty: “Will he be able to do his job, which is work for the Duttons? And if not, what does that mean for him? If he can’t have this job anymore, who is he and where is he?”

This cliffhanger has prompted a flurry of fan theories on Reddit, with one user, OK_Concentrate_9863, suggesting there’s an even chance Zane might meet his end.
They commented: “One of my favorite characters in 1923. In true TS fashion, he’s the guy you like that then gets killed.
“If Zane and his wife are both dead, then I can certainly see the Duttons taking their children under their wing.”
However, viewers breathed a sigh of relief as the latest episode dispelled fears of a grim fate; Zane and Alice did not perish behind bars but instead faced a treacherous journey back to the ranch, culminating in a heartfelt reunion.
