Yellowstone could be replaced, sooner rather than later. The Yellowstone franchise, created by Taylor Sheridan, has redefined the Western genre and taken the world by storm. It began in 2018 with the release of its flagship series, Yellowstone, focusing on the Dutton family and their fight to keep control over their Montana cattle ranch. Due to its success, it has led to a few spin-offs, including 1883, 1923, Marshals, and Dutton Ranch.
STARZ has announced plans for what could be a replacement for Sheridan’s Yellowstone with showrunner Kirk A. Moore (known for Jack Ryan) and producers with titles previously worked on, including Breaking Bad and Interview with the Vampire. The series will be centered on the world of Black rodeo in Texas, which will feature eight episodes in its first season.
At the time of writing, there is no official title for the project, but the official logline is as follows:
Infused with hip hop swagger and country soul, the series unfolds in Southeast Texas, where rodeo isn’t just what you do — it’s who you are. At the center are three siblings bound by the legacy their mother built and the unfinished business their father left behind. Driven by their own ambitions and drawn into each other’s orbit, alliances shift, relationships tangle, and nothing stays private for long.
Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming at STARZ spoke of the upcoming series and stated, “Messy family dynamics, jaw-dropping spectacle, and an undeniable swagger – this is the kind of bold, original storytelling we’re proud to own from the ground up. With a touch of urban grit and a huge dose of country soul, it’s Texas through and through. There’s nothing else like it, and we’re thrilled to bring it to STARZ’s audiences.”
STARZ has notable series under its belt, including the Power universe, which consists of Power, Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and Power Book IV: Force. As well as the notable Outlander series, which is currently in its final season. The streaming network now venturing into Western territory could signal that Sheridan’s ever-growing Yellowstone universe, as well as Netflix and Prime Video adding Western series, could signal an attempt at their own successes.
Yellowstone is growing and will be releasing a fourth spin-off titled Dutton Ranch on May 15. It will follow Rip Wheeler (played by Cole Hauser) and Beth Dutton (played by Kelly Reilly) after the events of the final season of Yellowstone, as they attempt to build a new life in Texas, as a rival ranch threatens their existence and empire.
STARZ has yet to reveal an official title for the Yellowstone replacement series, and has not revealed an official release date.
