Kevin Costner’s Replacement?! All We Know About Matthew McConaughey’s Yellowstone Spin-Off

Alright! Alright! Alright! No actor seems more perfect for a Taylor Sheridan Western than Matthew McConaughey. He’s got the look, the accent, and the charm. It’s actually a shame that McConaughey hasn’t starred in dozens of Western movies. He ought to be the genre’s king by now. Interestingly, McConaughey was in talks to star in a Yellowstone spinoff a few years ago. The failure to strike a deal was a missed opportunity, but we’ll get to that shortly. Like Taylor Sheridan, Matthew McConaughey knows all about cowboy life. He was born in Uvalde, Texas, and still lives in the state. The actor’s parents reportedly married each other three times and got divorced twice (which sounds like a perfect subplot for a Sheridan show). Despite early childhood challenges, McConaughey made a great life for himself. While he is now one of Hollywood’s sought-after stars, his resume could have been even better if he had been part of the Yellowstone universe.

Matthew McConaughey Could Have Been Kevin Costner’s Replacement

In 2023, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Paramount was eyeing Matthew McConaughey to lead a Yellowstone sequel series. The studio saw him as a perfect replacement for Kevin Costner, with whom negotiations were breaking down. The Dances With Wolves star wanted freedom to pursue passion projects, like the Horizon Saga, a critically panned film series that might have actually worked better as a TV show. However, Sheridan and the studio wanted him to be more committed to the role of John Dutton. Apparently, Costner demanded to work for only a week during the production of the second part of Season 5. To the execs, this was unacceptable. After failing to convince Costner, Paramount Global decided to end the parent show and replace it with a sequel spin-off starring McConaughey. Sheridan expressed enthusiasm about the casting, saying:

“He seems like a natural fit. We had a few conversations over the years, and spitballed a few ideas. Then he started watching “Yellowstone” and responded to it. He was like, ‘I want to do that.’ And by ‘that’ he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, ‘Buddy, that we can do.”

However, no agreement was ever made, and the project was later reworked into The Madison. But was the actor ever close to joining? Some commentators argued that news of a potential McConaughey was simply a negotiating tactic by the studio to make Costner commit. It’s unknown whether that’s true or not, as neither the actor nor his reps ever commented on the matter.

The Failed Project Was a Missed Opportunity for Both McConaughey and Sheridan

While Matthew McConaughey is a great actor and still one of the industry’s brightest stars, 2014 was his last great year in Hollywood. He hasn’t done outstanding work ever since that early 2010s run, when he starred in True Detective and appeared in three hit movies in a row (The Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club, and Interstellar). During this period, he won an Oscar and earned an Emmy nomination. Since then, McConaughey’s career has been shaky. His last hit movie was the British gangster thriller, The Gentlemen, directed by Guy Ritchie, which was released seven years ago. The Lost Bus was solid, but it wasn’t a hit. In terms of TV, he has only been a part of one other project since True Detective. He voiced an alternate version of Elvis Presley on the animated series, Agent Elvis, who moonlights as a spy for the United States government. However, that show was canceled after only one season.

Signing up for a Yellowstone spin-off might have put McConaughey’s career back on track and given him a stable pole to lean on for a couple of years. Even though he hasn’t done much TV in his career, True Detective is proof that he can be good in that particular space if he wants to. Casting McConaughey would have done wonders for Sheridan’s franchise. The actor is so likable that millions of people would have gotten Paramount subscriptions to watch him ride a horse. The Madison is decent, but it just hasn’t captured the hearts of fans the way a McConaughey show would have.

There Is Still Room for Matthew McConaughey in Taylor Sheridan’s Fictional Worlds

Has the Matt McConaughey ship sailed forever? Not really! Both Taylor Sheridan and Paramount have shown a willingness to continue expanding the Yellowstone franchise. A few more Yellowstone spin-offs are on the way, and even though the key cast members have already been announced, the Dallas Buyers Club star could still appear in some capacity. Even if McConaughey doesn’t get to be part of the franchise, there are more opportunities for him. Shows like Landman and Tulsa King have a Western feel and could include the star as a villain. It’s also worth remembering that Taylor Sheridan has a new $1 billion five-year deal with NBCUniversal. He is set to develop over 20+ projects for NBC and Peacock. Given his penchant for casting A-list stars, he just might need McConaughey sooner rather than later.

If opportunity knocks once more, McConaughey should consider taking it to save his career. Time is flying. He’ll need to be on bigger projects to stay relevant and continue commanding a large salary. Still, the actor’s fans hope he thrives, even if he never gets to work with Sheridan. The actor has two projects on the way, both of which will impress Yellowstone fans. McConaughey is reportedly in talks set to star alongside Cole Hauser (best known for playing Rip Wheeler in Yellowstone) in an unnamed Netflix series. Described as a sports drama, the project comes from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto. The actor will also reunite with Woody Harrelson in the comedy-drama Brothers, where the two will play fictional versions of themselves. In the show, the patience of the two stars is tested when they decide to live together with their families at McConaughey’s Texas ranch.
